SPSS Topics Discussion > Splitting one dataset into two

Hi, I have a question about splitting datasets in spss. I have got one big dataset and need to split it into two separate dataset which are then divided by one of the variables. On the internet I could find ways to do it through the syntax but as I don't have any experience in using that I couldn't make it work... So I was wondering if there is a different possibility or if someone could explain to me what exactly I need to do?

Hi Jana!

You can either use the "Split by" syntax command or use the drop-down menus. I think the menus are:

Data ->Split File

Once in the menu, you can choose to have the data split within the same data (so two separate datasets are not created, but rather results of analysis are just presented separately) or if you'd like separate new datasets created, in which case it will probably ask you to name the new datasets.
