Non-parametric Analysis Discussion > descriptive statistics

My question is about lekert scale of five point scale.
O 1 O 2 O 3 O 4 O 5
If there is some opinion about things like preference of food, for example 12 food recipes rated with five point scale, can mean be used to rank those 12 food recipes or median or mode or other means, if data can be collected about those food recipes and to know the top 5 favorite recipes for example
I see some research papers applying mean for such data,
which one is appropriate ?

Likert scale is often treated as continuous beacuse there is a numeric meaning to the data. If your purposes are simply to get a snapshot of the data then I think you are fine to use mean comparisons. However, if you are going to do more hypothesis testing and additional more complex analyses to draw inferences from the data, I'd lean towards a non-parametric test (e.g. Wilcoxon Signed-rank test).

The Wilcoxon signed-rank test is actually based on the Median, just any FYI.
